Small businesses (fewer than 100 employees) are the backbone of the U.S. economy, representing 99.9% of all firms according to the U.S. Small Business Administration’s December 2021 report. Among these, sole proprietorships dominate, accounting for 81% of businesses while contributing just 14% of total revenue. In contrast, corporations, which make up 19% of firms, generate the majority of revenue at 82%, underscoring their significant economic influence despite their smaller numbers.
