OVERVIEW OF CHALLENGES

U.S. Business Landscape & Upskilling Needs

Small businesses (fewer than 100 employees) are the backbone of the U.S. economy, representing 99.9% of all firms according to the U.S. Small Business Administration’s December 2021 report. Among these, sole proprietorships dominate, accounting for 81% of businesses while contributing just 14% of total revenue. In contrast, corporations, which make up 19% of firms, generate the majority of revenue at 82%, underscoring their significant economic influence despite their smaller numbers. Partnerships complete the picture, representing 5% of firms and accounting for 4% of revenue. This distribution reflects the diverse business structures that shape the U.S. economy, with each type contributing uniquely to economic activity and growth.

The challenges for these businesses are equally diverse. For small businesses with fewer than 100 employees, survival rates are a significant concern, with only 33% lasting beyond ten years. On the other hand, midsize (100–500 employees) and large enterprises—despite representing just 0.1% of firms—play a critical role in employment, providing jobs for over 55% of the private sector workforce. This highlights a dual challenge: while small businesses require resources and strategies to stabilize and scale, larger enterprises depend on upskilled employees and strategic partnerships to maintain their dominance and economic influence.

U.S. Business Economic Impact

Small businesses also drive job creation, accounting for 62% of net new jobs between 1995 and 2020. During this period, they added 12.7 million net new jobs, far exceeding the 7.9 million net new jobs created by large businesses. However, the economic contributions of small businesses are not without volatility. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 revealed their vulnerabilities, with over 15 million jobs lost in Q2 2020—8.6 million of which were from small businesses. This fluctuation underscores the precarious nature of small business operations during periods of economic uncertainty.

Despite these challenges, small businesses remain critical drivers of recovery and economic growth. They provide opportunities for innovation, job creation, and community development. However, their survival and success often depend on access to resources, strategic guidance, and the ability to adapt to changing market conditions. Larger enterprises, while economically dominant, face their own hurdles, such as maintaining operational efficiency and addressing workforce needs in a rapidly evolving business environment.
